Coaching Currency

Your journey as a pastor or ministry leader is not cookie cutter. You are unique in your gifts, talents, passions, weaknesses, fears, past & present life circumstances. Yes, there is still plenty you have in common with others – but your unique makeup will define how you lead, especially in adverse times.  Because we are first responsible for ourselves – our choices, our thoughts, our actions – I would say we’d agree that our personal growth should be top priority.

A coaching relationship can be immensely valuable for a leader because it’s primary objective is the growth of the leader.  But before I go into a few benefits of coaching, I want to say that coaching doesn’t replace the value of a good mentor and/or counsellor.
Below are 3 currencies of coaching that benefit a leaders growth:

Currency of Motivation

Coaching doesn’t play to the expertise of the coach, but it plays to the creativity and resourcefulness of the leader being coached. When the leader develops their own solution, their buy-in & commitment to follow through (or motivation) should be higher than simply doing what someone else has told them they should do.

Currency of Goals

A coaching relationship is intent on outcomes. As a leader becomes aware of what they want to change and where they want to grow, it’s necessary to take action that aligns with the leaders desire to change. These are often very practical, small steps that when consistently made end up taking us a long way.

A

Currency of Momentum

Coaching believes the leader is capable of knowing what their next step is. A coach is committed to walk with them towards discovering that step, and following through with action. This empowers the leader with confidence in their ability to explore and discern a way forward the next time they face a challenge.

Customize the Coaching Experience

Can I customize a coaching experience that would meet you and your team at your place of need?

Example 1: Create a cohort of 5-10 leaders for a Group Coaching experience, that would provide that mutual learning experience & community building. In addition, it would give your leaders an opportunity for a couple personal coaching sessions to work through what is most pressing for them personally in this time. (lower financial investment per person)

**Example 2: Below, I have previewed a brief summary of a proposal that I am currently offering to Lead Pastors within the Church of God in Western Canada (based on a coaching contract for 12 sessions)

  • 3 complimentary sessions from MDC
  • 3 sessions pd by denomination or overseeing organization
  • 6 remaining sessions are proposed as follows:
    • 3 sessions pd by church or local organization
    • 3 sessions pd by pastor or leader

If I can be of any service to you, please don’t hesitate to ask.  I would be honoured to partner with your church, denomination or organization in bringing the opportunity to offer leadership coaching to your team of leaders as we transition from 2020 into 2021.

**Intended to be a sample proposal.

Helpful Q & A

What is coaching?

Coaching is an unbiased, grace-filled relationship intent on advocating for the desired change a leader wants to make by helping them take responsibility for maximizing their own potential.

What's the DIFFERENCE between Coaching AND Counselling, Mentoring or Consulting...

1. Coaching is goal-driven as it reflects on the past for the purpose of context and focuses on creating goals that lead individuals into the future. Counselling focuses more on gaining wholeness & healing from past events.

2. Coaching is about drawing out of an individual what God has put in them. Mentoring is about imparting to an individual what God has given them.

3. Coaching relies on the belief that a person is the expert in their life & circumstance and is capable of creating their own solutions. Consulting relies heavily on the influence of the expert in finding a solution.

Coaching is based on the premise that...

1. That God is already at work initiating change within the participant in their current circumstance. The coaching relationship brings greater awareness to what God is doing and focuses on the participants responsibility to embrace & follow through with this change.

2. A participant is capable of coming up with their own solution, creating their own path forward. When this happens, the participant’s level of buy-in and motivation increases thus increasing their follow through and commitment towards the change they seek.

3. Self-awareness helps provide clarity on what change/growth a person desires.

4. Rather than provide advice or answers, it’s better to listen intently and ask good questions that cause a leader to reflect on their motivation and their desired change. This empowers them to create their own solutions to future challenges.

How does Coaching help build Resilience?

Resilience is NOT about asking, “when will I arrive or “when will this be over”, or even enduring adversity. Rather, resilience asks the question “How far can I go?” Coaching is not about a destination but a journey with landmarks along the way.

Practically this means that coaching is not only about being solution oriented, but it’s about being capable to create solutions that keep you in a growth trajectory. Instead of feeling stuck or even behind in ministry, this ability to move forward develops confidence in a leader who experiences growth.

Secondly, coaching provides a unique supportive structure to a pastor who often feels isolated due to the nature of pastoral ministry.

How might coaching help me as a pastor specifically?

Personally coming from the perspective of a pastor’s kid and a pastor, I understand this unique leadership role. However, it’s not our entire identity and coaching can help bring clarity to your growth not just as a pastor, but as a person. The reality is greater theological understanding, better preaching or vision casting will not sustain our ministry if we don’t have greater theological application in our lives. Simply put, we need to keep growing and have a growth plan because it doesn’t happen by accident.

Secondly, as pastors, there are a lot of voices, opinions & ideas that get thrown your way. This can sometimes make the role of pastoring feel more like that of a chef whose job is to create a gourmet meal out of a conglomeration of thoughts. This is a part of the role in some sense, however a pastor will lead best when they lead from a place of clarity and relationship with Jesus.

Because coaching meets you at the intersection of what God is doing in your current circumstance, you can pay close attention to what your thoughts are without having to formulate your answers according to what you think someone else would want. You get to be you!

When you are you, you can more clearly discern where your thoughts & actions align or don’t align with God’s leading. With that clarity you can then adjust to create goals & solutions that take you towards the growth you want to see.
